Astronomy as a learning tool for children of all ages is a very widely used approach. Due to the nature of the science, people can easily learn other adjacent sciences by using astronomy to create a backbone for it. Geometry, arithmetic, drawing, physics, all of those things can be learned by simply trying to understand a few basic principles about stars and about the universe.
Today, the information required to teach the children is closer to us than ever before. There is a multitude of sites that have relevant information on the field and, the most important thing, the information is scaled down to the level of understanding of those little ones. Of course, the best learning experiences occur when the children are closely supervised by a tutor or parent who can more easily explain harder to grasp concepts and relationships between different objects.
The sheer joy of astronomy also lies in exploration. Children like to be told stories and to learn fascinating new facts about the universe. They want to feel like they are having an adventurous discovery and you can use that level of inquisitiveness to guide them to learn new things without making them feel like they are working.
Another thing that can be done to reach the children is to engulf them in the many materials that have been devised to teach and entertain. The visually reach experiences that can be had on a field trip, the amount of fun of visiting a planetarium or watching an interactive representation of the universe cannot be compared to anything else. Of course, children have their own little things that they love doing. No matter what it is that they are interested in, they will almost certainly become interested in the things that you show to them.
Astronomy is after all the key to the universe and therefore should be an important part of any childrens teaching about their world, about the way they came to be and of all the important things that children need to know about the world they are in. Math, art, basic writing skills, all of those aspects can be learned in a few easy to grasp steps and they can lead to better school performance and a cleared vision about the world and about life. Do not wait for your child to grow and only then begin his training and his development.
The sooner your child learns how to approach the universe in which he lives the better he will be fitted to get at the heart of the matter. You need also to trust your child with basic knowledge of the world he has grown in. You need to let him discover the joy of learning and of discovery so that he will be better prepared for the more complicated stages of his life. Astronomy is the window to the universe as well as the window to teaching your child about the important relations between sciences and about culture. So get started in this kind of learning!
